What’s the best item to buy in the summer sales?

Well, that’s easy, it’s the one you’ll wear! Sounds simple, but when you’re faced with time pressures and the lure of a reduced price tag, the ‘going to sit unworn in the wardrobe’ garment is oh too tempting.

Here are five tips to help buy clothes you love and avoid wasting your money:-

1: Shop with an idea of what you need

It doesn’t have to be specific like ‘a pastel blue sweatshirt’. Focus on the gaps in your wardrobe e.g. summer styles for weekends or tops to wear when working from home. That way you avoid buying styles that do not fit into your lifestyle and are therefore seldom worn.

2: Buy classics

I’ve said this many times but the sales are a brilliant time to buy quality wardrobe staples such as a trench mac, jeans and t-shirts at lower price points. You won’t ever fail to get your cost per wear from these pieces making them a great investment!

3: Upgrade your usual brand

We should all be buying fewer but better quality pieces so this is the ideal opportunity to go up a notch in your brands and fabrics. If you’re looking for a blazer why not try COS instead of H&M or for t-shirts seek out superior fabrics such as Supima cotton.

4: Go off season

Most consumers adopt a buy now wear now policy. If you’re prepared to think ahead, there are lots of great bargains to be had. An expensive wool coat will be discounted to a fraction of the price in the height of summer as most people won’t contemplate buying it then.

5: Always consider what you’ll wear it with

It’s easy to shop like a magpie and buy statement pieces that catch your eye only to find you have nothing to wear with it. Before you make a purchase, always run though how you’ll create an outfit with it. If you can’t, either buy the rest of the outfit or don’t buy it!
