Five summer essentials you can wear – rain or shine!

The weather over the Platinum Jubilee weekend has been a typical UK mix of sunshine and showers. We know better than to expect sunshine when we want it, but we’re still disappointed when the rain clouds appear. In my experience many people take this approach to their wardrobes too.

In summer it’s easy to buy items of clothing that can only be worn when the sun shines and neglect the fact that you need outfits for the rain too – and more than one! If you haven’t got a few versatile pieces for any weather you’ll wear the same outfits on repeat and feel as gloomy as the rain clouds.

When I’m working with clients I always consider the outfits they have to wear in the rain as well as the sunshine. These are five pieces that have proved very useful:-

Wide leg trousers

Me&Em trousers

I’ll keep this brief as I may have mentioned them once or twice before! I love them because they are versatile and flattering for all body shapes. All you need to do is buy them in a shade that doesn’t show rain splashes! CosMe&EmFrankie shop and H&M have some great styles and check out my previous blog for a statement pair.

Shirt dress

Reiss dress

The simple clean shape of a shirt dress helps you look professional but not overly formal – think the opposite of the tight body con dress! It looks fabulous with sandals in the sun but also works with trainers and shoes in the rain. This is a lovely style from Reiss.

Statement blouse

Sezane blouse

There are so many gorgeous blouses in the shops from bright vibrant shades to punchy prints with voluminous sleeves inbetween. They are especially useful for hybrid work environments and a great way to elevate your outfits on dreary days! Add some fabulous accessories and they’ll take you from day to evening too

Trench

COS trench

It’s a great layering piece whatever the weather. This single breasted style works well if you have a large bust and there are plenty of the traditional double breasted styles around too. I always find Uniqlo and COS trenches great value but if you want to push the boat out you can’t go wrong with Burberry.  They vary a lot in the fit so be prepared to try a few before you buy. If you need a hand to buy one then this article will be useful.

Shoes

Ayede black flats

If the rain is torrential you’ll obviously need wellies but for light rain and damp days a flat black pump is very useful. The low cut front elongates your legs which makes them a flattering style to wear with skirts and dresses. If you prefer a slight heel then a block heel would provide height and have the added bonus of actually being able to walk in it!

Need help planning outfits for all weathers this summer? In my full style experience I will help you clear out items you no longer love (or fit) from your wardrobe, and help you shop for new pieces you’ll love… come rain or shine!

It’s also the perfect way to update your wardrobe after two years of lockdowns and tricky shopping. I can show you what styles you can still wear and adapt, and which pre-pandemic looks to say goodbye to.
