Our wardrobes are having a challenging time at the moment. Just when you are getting to grips with what to wear back to the office after the pandemic, you now have to factor in 40 degree heat!
Unfortunately, it seems that heatwaves are going to be commonplace so in order to ensure you don’t swelter at your desk it pays to have your hot weather outfits ready.
I’ve put together a few tips below to help you find appropriate work wear that keeps you cool but also looks stylish and smart.
Keep the fit loose
Garments that don’t cling to the body are perfect for keeping you cool and comfortable. The good news is that they are on trend at the moment so the shops are full of wide leg trousers and flowy midi skirts. If you have ever looked at my Instagram account you’ll know I get plenty of wear out of this midi skirt, so much so I’m sure everyone is sick of me wearing it!

Go for natural fibers
Linens and cottons allow the skin to breathe so are by far the best fabrics to wear in the heat. You can’t go wrong with a cool, crisp linen shirt in classic plain white or blue pinstripe as they always look smart for work. You can also choose a vibrant shade if you love wearing colour. I’m a big fan of Uniqlo’s but you can find them everywhere on the high street. Zara have some lovely styles.
Don’t forget about your underwear
You won’t find lingerie that is 100% cotton as underwear fabrics contain elastane or Lycra which is similar but a trademarked brand name. This ensures the garments are stretchy and comfortable and stops them falling down – always a good idea! Choose under garments that have a high cotton content and cotton gusset. Skin tone colours are a wardrobe essential as they aren’t as noticeable under lightweight fabrics and pale colours.
Keep toes hidden
Ok, I know this depends on where you work and what you are doing but if you are in any doubt don’t get your toes out! I haven’t yet met a client working in a professional industry who would like to conduct a face to face meeting or give a presentations with their feet on show. Imagine Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak debating in their flip flops! Neutral coloured leather flats work well in the summer and if you like a slight heel, wedge espadrilles are a great option.
Don’t overload the accessories
Less is definitely more in hot weather so keep accessories to a minimum. Delicate and lightweight pieces are all you need to add the finishing touch to an outfit. I’m usually a fan of statement jewellery but an oversized necklace or bangle can make the skin sweaty and sticky. If you would like a more dramatic look, layer a few fine pieces together.
