How to look ‘polished and professional’ and what that actually means.

Probably the biggest request I get from clients is to help them look ‘polished and professional’. But what does that actually mean in practice?

Let’s remove some of the confusion around what it actually is and crucially what it isn’t.

What polished and professional isn’t.

It isn’t being groomed to within an inch of your life. You don’t need to have a salon blow dry, full face of make-up and perfectly manicured nails.

It isn’t wearing head to toe expensive designer clothes. Of course, you can if you want to but there are perfectly good options out there for all budgets. The top fashion influencers always mix high end with high street.

It isn’t always formal. Workplace dress codes have relaxed considerably since the pandemic. If your outfits don’t reflect that you can look overly serious and out of date. To quote a recent client ‘my tottery high heels and shift dresses feel wrong now’.

What polished and professional is

It is looking current, confident and being appropriately dressed for your role. That means not wearing clothes you think you ‘should’ wear but outfits that suit your figure, personal style and feel like ‘you’

Here are three fail safe tips to help you do that:-

  1. Do a one minute groom check every night.
That’s enough time to check hair and nails are clean and tidy. Also ensure clothes and shoes aren’t stained, past their best and fit well. If you do this the night before you’ll have time to rectify any issues – dry shampoo is a godsend if you haven’t got time to wash your hair!
  2. Flat lay outfits and photograph them
Lay outfits out on the floor or bed including footwear and accessories. If you do this weekly or at least once a month you’ll have ‘go-to’ outfits at the ready. You can segment the looks further into working from home outfits, office outfits, day to evening outfits according to what suits your lifestyle. It will save you so much time in the long run. Here’s an example of flat lays I did for a client in an outfit building session.
  1. Ditch the all black and introduce colour
Wearing vibrant colours and combining them in interesting ways is a brilliant way to look confident and up to date. Colour has a positive effect on your mood as well as affecting the people around you. It ensures you are visible and adds a touch of personality which is just what you need to feel great in your outfits. I’ve created the outfit below so you can see how introducing bold shades doesn’t have to be complicated.
