How to shop the sales

At this time of year I’m often asked ‘What are the best items to buy in the January sales?’ Well, that’s an easy one to answer, it’s quite simply the ones you’ll wear again and again.

Easy to answer but not always so easy to do! We’re often lured into buying garments with huge discounts or attracted to glittering pieces we rarely wear. What you should be seeking out are versatile and wearable styles that you can wear week in, week out, today and in the coming months.

And to ensure you buy clothes you’ll actually wear, here are some questions you need to ask yourself before hitting the credit card!

Are you being tempted by the ‘‘4000 people are looking at this”online message?
They probably aren’t and even if they are it bears no relevance to what you actually need.

Would you buy it if it wasn’t on sale?
It doesn’t matter how big the discount is, if it’s an item you won’t use it’s money wasted.

Does it go with anything else in your wardrobe?
Before you buy, always think of at least three different ways you can wear the item.

Do you already own a similar item?
We all have a comfort zone of styles we buy into again and again. Don’t buy anything similar to clothes you already own as you’ll feel tired of your wardrobe and stuck in a rut!

Does it suit your figure and colouring?
Understand the colours and styles that work for your body shape. That way you’ll stop being overwhelmed by choice and can shop with focus.

Is it a magpie piece?
The shiny and glittering pieces are designed to catch your eye. Beware though, you can be left with a wardrobe full of separate pieces that you struggle to put into outfits.

Is it value for money at the price?
Look at the price a garment is, not what it was, and consider if it’s worth it. Retailers often do special sale buy ranges that are lower quality than the usual range so not an actual bargain.

Will it last more than one season?
Choose classic timeless styles as these won’t date as quickly as the latest trends.

Is it a brand you trust?
Whilst I’m a champion of small independent brands, not all of them have adequate quality departments and no quibble refund policies. Always check the small print if you are buying from a new brand.

Does it fit your lifestyle?
I often come across garments in clients’ wardrobes that just don’t fit their lifestyle. You may love the beautiful silk dress but if you wear smart casual outfits every day it’s likely to be a waste of money.
