I’m a firm believer that the right piece of knitwear makes the change of season and onset of colder weather easier to bear. Stylish, effortless and warm, it’s the ‘no brainer’ garment you can throw on to make an instantly stylish outfit – no ironing required!
Aside from the obvious benefit of helping you keep the heating off for longer, it has multiple other uses. It’s the ideal garment for relaxed casual dressing. It can be dressed up for the evening with the help of some accessories. It is a great colour vehicle for video calls as well as nailing the ‘I haven’t made too much effort’ look for a low key lunch with friends.
Here are 5 key styles you need to know about for your autumn wardrobe:-
1. Tanks
A sleeveless tank top, often referred to as a vest, is a great piece for layering. Wear it with a plain t-shirt for mild weather days, a shirt for a smarter look or a roll neck when it’s chilly. It even looks great in the evening with nothing underneath!

2. Button details
Buttons elevate the knitted sweater to a whole new level. It’s a chic and stylish look much favoured by Parisians which is why the French Brands like Sezane do it so well. I’m often asked by clients which garments look professional in a relaxed dress code and this is one I recommend as it ticks all the boxes
3. Stripes
A striped knit is a wardrobe staple that you never tire of. I’ve included this 100% cotton one for those of you who find wool itchy. If you are looking for a woolen option there are a huge amount of styles around on the high street. I’ve recently bought Uniqlo’s lambswool high neck jumper with a couple of clients who loved it and COS have a cashmere one if you want to push the boat out!
4. Cardigans
No longer the frumpy style worn over a shift dress, the cardigan has had a smart new makeover the past couple of years. This bright oversized cardigan looks fabulous with jeans for a relaxed weekend outfit or team with wide leg trousers and a t-shirt for a smarter look.
5. Cashmere
You really can’t go wrong with a classic cashmere sweater but size up if you want a contemporary looser fit. If you are going to invest in cashmere, be aware that a high price tag doesn’t always denote quality. I’ve seen many expensive cashmere sweaters that look very shabby after only a couple of wears. Always keep the receipt and return the garment straight away if that happens to you.
TIP: Don’t hang around if you are looking for knitwear as the best pieces are selling out first. COS and Uniqlo have already sold out of some of their classic cashmere sweaters.
